Department of English
About the Department
At present, the Department of English offers 3/4 Years’ B.A. Programme in English Major (for 3 Years) and English Honours/Honours with Research (for the 4th Year) as per NEP-2020 syllabus. The present intake capacity for English Major for the newly admitted students is 75. Among other subjects, SEC Paper, Minor course, MDC, AEC in English are also offered in various semesters as per NEP-2020 Course Curriculum. However, as per old CBCS Curriculum, Honours Programme in English is also running parallelly for the 4th & 6th Semester students of the college.
Notice
At the very onset of any academic session, the Department organises Orientation programme. The teachers try to finish the syllabus as per routine within due time of a semester-session. Departmental Routines, Course Distribution, Programme Outcome, Course Outcome, Teaching/Lesson Plans are shared with the students duly. Students are guided to borrow relevant books from the library as per the requirement of their syllabus. Paper based internal and tutorial exams are conducted prior to any Semester (theory) exam. For the Dissertation-project paper in Semester-VI, the students are carefully guided by the teachers so that the students can prepare informative and critical dissertations with suitable citation styles. Prior to the CBCS system, yearly test examinations were conducted in the I+I+I mode till 2019.
The teachers of the department usually incorporate class lectures, direct method, discussion –based method, audio-visual method, literary pedagogy, English communication practices, lectures based on power-point presentations, group discussions and so on as means of teaching-learning process. Relevant study materials (hard and soft copies), text books (pdfs) or links are either circulated in the class room or through the WhatsApp group of a particular batch (every year at the beginning of a new academic session a new students’ WhatsApp group is created by the teachers and updated accordingly to strengthen the students – Teachers communication and academic exchanges). The department occasionally organises seminar/workshop, syllabus-based special lectures (both offline and online), Add-on Courses, Career Counselling Courses and many literary-cultural activities as per requirements and situations. The department plans to conduct more student-oriented seminars and workshops in upcoming days to enlighten their knowledge. The Department also participate in both faculty exchange and Students-Exchange Programmes as per the terms of signed MoU with other institutions.
In near future, the administrative vision to set up a language lab at the college will definitely help the students (mostly being the first-generation learners, who often face the linguistic challenges with foreign language like English), in sharpening their language and phonetic skills and vocabulary. The students from this department, however, usually get a mixed grade of results. Hence, the department envisions that all students of different merits get benefitted academically, culturally and of course morally in the course of their journey in the college so that they can prove themselves to be the real “father[s/mothers] of the nation”.
