About the Department

In 2007, the college became affiliated with the University of Gour Banga. The Department of Sociology at Buniadpur Mahavidyalaya was established in 2013. Initially, the department offered only the undergraduate general course and had no sanctioned substantive posts. Nevertheless, the department welcomed its first teachers, relying on the support of Guest Teachers. Smt. Laboni Mandal joined as a Guest Teacher on 15 November 2013, and her dedication played a crucial role in the department’s early development and its growing popularity among students.

Today, the department is supported by two Visiting Faculty members who address the academic needs of the students. Smt. Dilruba Yeasmin, the first visiting faculty member, joined on 01 December 2018, followed by Mr. Ripom Paul on 02 September 2019. The Department of Sociology now offers a 3/4 Years’ B.A. Programme in Sociology Major (for 3 Years) and Sociology Honours/Honours with Research (for the 4th Year) in alignment with the NEP-2020 syllabus. The department regularly organizes seminars, workshops, and special lectures to enhance the educational experience. Beyond degree programs, various certificate programs and specializations are available to further develop students’ skills and encourage them to explore new ideas and challenge assumptions. Faculty members participate in academic programs and administrative duties within the college. Teaching responsibilities are evenly distributed among all faculty, who bring extensive knowledge, experience, and passion to their roles in teaching, research, and mentorship. The syllabus is completed within the scheduled time frame of each semester session. Detailed information on departmental routines, course distribution, program outcomes, course outcomes, and teaching/lesson plans is provided to students. Students are also guided in borrowing relevant books from the library as needed for their studies.

The department employs diverse teaching methods, including class lectures, direct methods, discussion-based methods, audio-visual techniques, Power-Point presentations, and group discussions. Regularly provided study materials, study groups, class tests, and internal tutorials help students enhance their academic skills and achieve their goals. Tutoring and academic support services are available to all students at no charge, assisting with course materials, writing assignments, and exam preparation.

Additionally, the department encourages students to participate in co-curricular activities to develop their personalities fully. The department is dedicated to ensuring equal access to education for all students, including those with disabilities, by offering various accessibility services and accommodations to support their academic pursuits.

Recognizing that student success extends beyond academics, the department offers a range of health and wellness services. These include counselling and mental health support, wellness workshops, and fitness programs to help students maintain a healthy balance between their academic and personal lives.

The department benefits from extensive library resources, encompassing both print and digital collections as well as online journals, to support the academic and research needs of students and faculty. At the beginning of each new academic session, a new students’ WhatsApp group is created and regularly updated by the teachers to enhance student-teacher communication and academic exchanges.

Why study Sociology?

The Department of Sociology, a vital part of many universities, is dedicated to the scientific study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behaviour. As a multidisciplinary field, sociology intersects with various aspects of human society, including culture, institutions, and communities. The department typically offers a wide range of courses that cover fundamental sociological theories, research methodologies, and specific areas of social life such as family, education, religion, crime, and health.

Prof. Giddings has verily pointed out, “Sociology tells us how to become what we want to be”. Sociology studies society in a scientific way. It improves our understanding of society and increases our power of social action. It helps the students to know an enriching culture of their own. By studying sociology, students can understand the relationship between individuals and social institutions. Sociological knowledge is necessary for understanding and planning of the society. It helps the government to promote or introduce different welfare programmes for tribal people. Sociologists investigate social issues, crime, cultures, organizations, social institutes, and how people interact.

Sociology graduates possess valuable skills in research, communication, and critical thinking that are sought after by employers.
  6. Personal Growth: Studying sociology can lead to personal growth and self-awareness by fostering empathy, tolerance, and a deeper understanding of oneself and others. Sociology encourages individuals to reflect on their own beliefs, values, and experiences within the context of broader social structures.
  7. Interdisciplinary Connections: Sociology intersects with various disciplines, including psychology, anthropology, economics, political science, and environmental studies. By studying sociology, students gain interdisciplinary perspectives that enrich their understanding of complex social issues and phenomena.
  8.
